Based on the IRC discussion, you're expecting any update to the TreeSet value to be automatically visible in the cache. Infinispan does not do that, cache.get(key) will always return the initial value on other nodes. In fact it will return the initial set even on the same node, if the cache is configured with <memory> <binary/> </memory>
