How to specify no of instance for session bean

Is there any way to specify in number of instances the session bean should have. For example I need to specify only 2 instances allowed for a particular session bean.

Look in the standardjboss.xml in the JBOSS_DIST/server//conf directory.
If you look in the section for "Standard Stateless SessionBean" you will find a "maximumsize" parameter. by default, it is set to 100. Change the param to suit ur needs.

I tried that and it didn't seem to work, it still comes up 100. Any clues..??

Try true as well (at the same level as the tag and just after it, in the container-pool-conf settings)
