advice for auth with apache & jboss

Hello,
I have an old working apache/cgi web application witch use basic authentication (.htaccess), on the other hand I have new features(servlet,jsp & ejb) running on jboss. I'm trying to interconnect the both so that it's transparent for the one who's connected on the prehistoric application. I'm using mod_jk with success but the problem is for the authentication.... I cannot map the apache auth to jboss
Does anyone have an idea to keep the system as simple as possible
