    Jboss start up options question

We're running Windows 2k servers, Jboss 3.2.3. I have been reviewing our installation and noticed that in the startup scripts there are options for running "java" with a "-server" option. What does this do? I've never run Java this way before and I can't find mention of it in any Jboss documentation.

I'm guessing it optimizes caching and memory usage, however I'd prefer not to guess.
