running jboss 3 & 4 on same server

How can I run jboss 3.2.6 and jboss 4.0.1 on the same server without getting into trouble with $JBOSS_HOME

You do not need to set the JBOSS_HOME environment variable, the run script contains a line that sets it as appropriate relative to the run script.

You will however need to make sure that both instances are configured to use a different set of ports otherwise you will have a lot of port conflicts.
