How to prevent EAR deployment until datasource is ready?

I read this:

but I don't understand how to use it.

Where do I put this example for my EAR files? Is it in the EAR's deployment descriptor? Is it elsewhere? I am unclear. If anyone can shed some light, I'd be very grateful.
