Defining a -ds.xml for the new datasource and dropping it in deploy directory seemed like the easiest solution but that would also redeploy the whole war file and I want to avoid that.
I would appreciate it if someone can point me to the right direction.

Weston, do you have any more information on this JIRA task? I've read the one comment and looked over all the subversion commits. It looks like there was a lot of work being done on this but it also looks like the last commit was on Mar 22, 2007. Is there more work to be done on this or did it just not get marked as complete?
Any information you have would be much obliged.
