Performance problem with modalpanel under Linux

Hello!

First of all, I like to thank you all for your great work! I am using richfaces since a few months and like it really much.

A few days ago I tried to use the rich:modalpanel and I experienced a really bad performance problem when using it under Linux. It takes about 3-5 seconds until the dialog opens and 2-3 further seconds until the background is disabled (on a P4 2.8). Moving the dialog is almost impossible.

First, I thought it is a problem with my machine (Ubuntu Feisty with Firefox 2.0.0.6). But the problem occurs also on other workstations with different Linux distributions (at least Ubuntu 6.x, Ubuntu 7.x and Gentoo) and different Firefox versions. On Windows everything works perfect.

Other modal dialogs like Dojo, extjs or icefaces work really good on Linux. What could be the problem? I hope you can reproduce and solve the problem.

Hello!

I can confirm that the above mentioned bahavior also occurs on other Linux Systems with Firefox ( I asked some friends to test it). It seems to me that almost every Firefox on Linux is affected. If your machine is really fast (dual core cpu) then the problem is negligible.

Can somebody reproduce and confirm this problem as a bug? Currently rich:modalpanel is almost unusable for Linux users with Firefox.

I'm running Linux on a dual core cpu (3800 X2) and for me its also pretty slow . I must say that I'm using an older firefox (1.5), so perhaps that matters too.

Maybe I found the reason why it works much faster on Windows than on Linux. I saw that the CPU usage was almost on 100% while rendering the modal panel. The responsible process for the high load was X. That was one reason more for me to find some time for installing the binary nvidia driver.

I tried the modal panel with the much much faster binary driver and the modal panel opens in round-a-about 1 second! I think that was the reason why the modal panel rendered much faster on Windows systems (a fast driver for the graphic card).

But the problem in general does still exist (for Firefox browsers) because other modal dialogs renders really fast without a fast X driver.

No I don't think it's only a Firefox's fault (but It can interfere somehow). The same here on Opera 9.24, Epiphany (ok, this one is Gecko-based). Only Konqueror works quickly with modal Panel... This can be a regression, since it was working fine on all my browsers something about 2 months ago... Guys, check these browsers too (Opera at least)...

System: Kubuntu Gutsy 7.10, ATI driver, RF 3.1.2.
