Support .. notion in vfs paths

Is there some similar VFS use case for a single '.' in the path?

What exactly does a '.' do?
Pointing to current directory?

It points to the current file. These should be equivalent:
vf.findChild(".");
vf.findChild("");

and these:
vf.findChild("x");
vf.findChild("./x");
