No definite answer... But does your .ejb3 package have any beans that use the timer (@Timeout)?

Not using timers at all.. have a very simple collection of entity beans that reference each other, and one session bean that manages them.

Could it have anything to do with not properly closing references to beans/context in the client?

I stepped into this problem myself, it seems to be caused by a previously failed bean passivation due to some non-serializeable/-transient bean attributes.
