rich:menuItem should not work outside the rich:menu. It was a bug that it used to work. The bug was fixed in 3.2.0. The problem with spec inconsistency was not only one problem. So, the fix was reasonable.
However, you are not only one who use this undocumented feature of rich:menuItem. So, we are going to allow rich:menuItem outside the rich:menu in the future version of RichFaces -

sergeysmirnov Apr 4, 2008 2:15 AM (in response to au3)Yes, the richfaces-demo toolBar has some stuff on it that actually is not the menu or something like that. It just a stuff. ToolBar allows to put anything on it. The purpose of the demo is showing this fact.
