Variable instances

What does it mean when a variable instance in the jbpm_variable instance table has no associated token_, tokenvariablemap_, processinstance_ and taskinstance_ ?

Can you find out how that process variable was created ? perhaps by looking at the name or the value ?

Whilst investigating http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=74267, I stumbled upon how they are created. The referred to thread describes how they got there.
