portlets not appearing on new portal page

I have downloaded the windows version of the portal and AS. I am following the portal quickstart user guide. I created a new page and added the portlets as described but when I go to the tab for the page I created, the rest of the tabs disappear and no portlets are shown.

I played around with some of the other portlets and I can get one or two to appear intermittently. I can see on the windows CMD box that started up when I ran run.bat that alot of errors are showing e.g. WARN [htmlLabelRenderer] Unable to find component 'name' <calling findComponent on component 'page_form_4:jbp15f0ce3b_id196'

I tried changing the security settings but it did not help. I was logged on as admin/admin

Am I doing something wrong?

Also I downloaded this portal and JBoss AS release as a package. I did not check it out of CVS...
