Parameters in messages: why #0 not {0}?

Is there any reason why parameters in messages are marked by #0 not more traditional {0}?

Well, it felt more syntactically consistent with #{expression}. However, I'm open to discuss this stuff. I notice that the Java MessageFormat class supports stuff like {1,date}, and so I'm considering supporting that.
