Second JBoss Seam Book Released

Well the second (although apparently first to print) JBoss Seam book is being released this month. All the chapters were sent to the printer on friday so it should be out around the 26th of this month.

The book being part of the Beginners series is a beginners book. The first few chapters cover the basics of Java 5, JSF, and EJB3. So those that aren't familiar with those concepts get a crash course.

The other chapters go into Seam, the contexts, configurations, extra features, and settings.



Hopefully these books will help the Seam community spread Seam more.

In addition Apress, is already working on a follow up book to this one as well.

I've actually been working on it Since June.

Just got soo busy with it never had time to request help on here for reviews till later. The book will be about 320pages.

I was able to do a lot of changes in december in it to try and cover some of the 1.1.0 changes that occured.

That's very cool. Congratulations! I will have to get one. :)

Our book is off to the press this week as well (after the new security chapter is proof-read:)). I think developers will really benefit from having several different view points on the technology -- Seam is such a great framework, different people will see value in different aspects.

yeah i really tried to push back on security till it was released, but we couldnt. So what i have in the book is basically what was in CVS end of December. It's somewhat correct, i am gonna update the source code for the book though to use the 1.1.5 stuff.

I'll post the TOC sometime. But from what I saw in your TOC, there are some good differences. Which is good. I purposely didnt look at your book while writing it because I didnt want to be influenced either way while writing.

But thank you, and I agree about Seam. In fact i would go as far as saying Seam really gives EJB3 a meaningful advantage in applying real reasons to use things like SFSBs and when to use SFSB vs SLSBs.

All of you are doing a really good job on the framework.

I'm writing the other Seam book for APress. It's a more advanced "practical guide", applying the various capabilities in a quasi-real-world application.

Keeping up with these "minor" releases has been a challenge, to say the least. But that's always the curse of technology books.

Seam APIs are pretty stable now. Yeah, stuff like seam-gen and security was in flux until recently, but that was because it was, well, brand new, and we were still working on it ....

The basic core functionality has not changed much recently. Configuration tends to change from time to time, but that happens in all projects.

I don't believe APress publishes through Safari (yet).

I was referring mainly to the new features that have been rolling out. As you say, the core stuff hasn't changed much.

Note: This is, in no way, a complaint - I would never want to be accused of asking motivated people to slow down. :) Just recognition of the mismatch between print publishing cycles and current software product development cycles.
