When would SEAM 2.0.0 GA and SEAM 2.0.1 GA be released and w

This is urgent. We are currently using SEAM 2.0.0 CR1 with JBoss AS version 4.2.0. CR1. We are planning to go into production with our app right end of Oct, early Nov 2007. We would like to upgrade to 2.0.0 GA or 2.0.1 GA of SEAM but also upgrade to the latest JBoss GA release (4.2.2 GA or 4.2.3 GA).

Q:1. When is SEAM 2.0.0 GA or 2.0.1 GA scheduled to be released and made available?

Q2: Which JBoss AS GA versions would SEAM 2.0.0 GA or SEAM 2.0.1 GA be supported on?

Q3: Are there any plans to support SEAM on JBoss 5.x series? If so, when is such a version of SEAM supposed to come out?

      Thanks
      Ajay

2.0.0.CR1 will be released in the next week or two (5 bugs to close). 2.0.0.GA is currently has no release date (watch JIRA's roadmap)

Q2: Which JBoss AS GA versions would SEAM 2.0.0 GA or SEAM 2.0.1 GA be supported on?

4.2 series (i.e. any releases, current 4.2.0.GA and 4.2.1.GA). I think we will be working on 5.0.0.BETA compatibility between CR1 and 2.0.0.GA.

But if by support you mean Red Hat subscription based support, you'll need to speak to Sales/support to find out what the support matrix is.

Thanks for the info. Let me understand this right. What you are saying is:

There is not a release date yet for 2.0.0 GA or 2.0.1 GA of SEAM. When they come out, they will be supported on all 4.0.x, 4.1.x, 4.2.x GA versions of JBoss.

            Now, some more questions:
            1. Which versions of JBoss AS is SEAM 2.0.0 CR1 supported on?
            2. What is the delta between 2.0.0 CR1 and 2.0.0 GA? Is it just bug fixes or there are some additional features that I am getting?
            3. What is the delta between 2.0.0 GA and 2.0.1 GA?

Which version of SEAM and JBoss would you recommend me going in Production with if I have to deliver by Oct end?

no... not 4.0.x and not 4.1.x I think Pete was clear on that.

1: With some difficult and complex deduction I think 2.0.0.CR1 is supported on 4.2 series
2: Watch the roadmap in Jira
3: Watch the roadmap in Jira

Personally I've used a nightly version of 2.0.0 on JBoss AS 4.2.0 If it does what you need, It's fine (my motto)

As Ronald says. (N.B. there is no 4.1 series of JBoss AS). You can run Seam2 on AS 4.0.5.GA (with JEMS installer) but it will require modification of AS libraries.

CR1 should be major feature/refactoring complete (most new features between the 2 are extensions of existing stuff or internal impl). Much of 2.0.0.GA will be docs/fixes related.

I would suggest Seam2 for production in late October - probably still a CR at that point though.

                  JIRA's roadmap says "06/Aug/07" for 2.0.0.GA...?

Pete, please remove every date from the JIRA road maps. This is a bad practice for an open source project. Obviously release dates depend on contributions.

                    • 7. Re: When would SEAM 2.0.0 GA and SEAM 2.0.1 GA be released a

I do like the release dates, but the never seem to be updated. If the open issues were evaluated and an estimate was made, this would help out some of us on the bleeding edge that are planning a production release of a product based of Seam 2.0 on or before GA.

I was also under the assumption that most of the work that affected the release date was being done by JBoss employees with some contributions from users mainly in the form of testing and an occasional patch.

Yes, if everybody would work a little more, for free of course, the world would be a better place.

                          I've asked this before...

Will there be a release of Seam 1.3.0 which appeared as an alpha earlier this year?

In particular, I was hoping to get fixes for this http://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/JBSEAM-967

If my memory is correct, Gavin responded that he has changed the Seam code too much for the 2.0 release in order to continue on with a 1.3 release path. That doesn't make too much sense with source-control tagging. Given also that Seam 2.0 is focussed on being supported with JBoss AS 4.2 (yes it works on 4.0.5 with AS changes supposedly), I'm concerned that those of us on the Seam 1.1, 1.2 path are dead ended already. It's not necessarily straight forward to just force several teams of developers to upgrade their version of Seam, and also their version of JBoss AS in order to obtain bug fixes.

So... what's the final word on Seam 1.X releases ? no more? if so, that's a bit frustrating. We'll eventually get to Seam 2.0 and Jboss 4.2, but in the meantime, we'll be trying to develop and maintain existing Seam 1.1- and 1.2-based applications.

                          Thanks,
                          Brad Smith

                            Pete and Chris,

I really appreciate your time and effort in taking time to answer these questions. I have got answers to all the questions I had to my satisfaction.

I must thank everyone on the JBoss SEAM team for their hard work, support in developing and maintaining SEAM.

                            Thanks

There will be no Seam 1.3 release. That branch is now Seam 2.0. If you want to have a Seam 1.3, go back to the date we made the announcement of the renaming and get a CVS snapshot of that trunk. Then change the version number to "1.3" and compile.

Well, here you actually have a much easier option: Seam 1.2.1 is part of the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, for which you can buy support/bugfixing services for a few years from Red Hat. Or, because it is open source, you can fix it yourself or pay someone else to fix whatever you don't like.

This comment suggests you think I want something for free...

We like the Seam framework a lot but we don't want to be in the business of maintaining frameworks. We are, however, paying customers of JBoss (now Red Hat) - we even sent a good number of people to JBoss world for 2 years in a row (no JBoss world this past summer :-( ) - so from my perspective, we're doing our part to be payed customers - we're not looking for a free ride. I think I would be less willing to put my vote in for Seam-specific support after watching the 1.3.0 Alpha disappear - just too much volatility in how it evolves.

                                    For the record:

1.3ALPHA1 was targeted at AS 4.2 and included JBoss EL. 1.3.0.BETA1 was *renamed* to 2.0.BETA due to the substantial refactoring (even if we had released a 1.3.BETA/GA it would have included these refactorings, but the name change reinforces this).

You would be much much better off pushing for a 1.2.2 maintainance release that contained selected backports of fixes from trunk to the 1.2 series.
