Do you have a firewall blocking the svn port. I think the svn default port 3690.

Yes i am sitting behing a ring of firewall.
I thaught that doesnt matters as i am using http. Does it?
I can download the index.html using wget on the same url

Sorry, you are correct.
I can run the exact command that you posted. Sorry but I don't know what the issue is. Check with you network administrator and see if they know if you have any restriction in you firewall that would prevent this.
