selectedtab always null on switchtype client?

i got following code

<rich:tabPanel style="width:470px" id="tabcurrent" selectedTab="#{Page.selectedtab}" switchType="client">

but selectedtab remains always null...

is this not availiable on switchtype client?

how could the bean get updated when there is no request to server?

i use #{Page.currentab} but it remains null.

if i use switchtype ajax i loose entries made by the use in one tab.

Evidently, request should be sent by some external component, e.g. command link.
