Also, underneath the 'projects' folder there are a number of other components that end up in the AS but have their own release cycle.

This is exactly the answer to my question.
How do I know which release of Deployers ends up in which release of JBoss AS? When I look at the tags on Deployers, I see things like "2.0.8.GA" and similar, but how do I find out which of them corresponds to a particular AS release (5.0.1 in my case)?
Or, more generally:
What is the preferred way to have all the source to debug inside JBoss -- as it steps through a lot of that "external" code: JBoss Web, JBoss SX...
Do I just build them as separate projects and replace the jars in JBoss? For JBoss WS at least, my understanding is that its "install" target will put the built jars into the AS -- is that it? am I supposed to do the same thing with the other components, too?
