Change URL on Ajax action

Hi,
is there a way to change the URL of the page after an Ajax action without reloading the entire page?

I have an image album, when the user click on an image the page reload to show the image detail and the url change, from inside the image detail i have the Next and Previous button to change image: i would like to just change the image and the url without reloading the whole page.

Gmail does that, and if i'm not wronging i've seen the feature into the backbase ajax framework too.

Is there some hack or pattern I can try to do that?

Also Facebook does that with pictures, I also checked gmail and they both are appending other data after the URL using the # (like for an html bookmark)...
