There are a lot of new (transitive) dependencies of infinispan-client-hotrod in 5.0.0.CR3 compared to 4.2.1.

Assuming avro is optional, can that module be split?

Indeed it's optional. I'll mark it as provided or optional cos it's only needed if you explicitly decide to use that the apache avro marshaller.
