I belive this is actually Spring/JSF interoperatbility issue and nothing RichFaces specific.
The /javax.faces.resource is related to JSF resource loading.
However I don't know what is a cause.

After you mentioned Spring/JSF integration I searched the Web. It looks like the limitation or bug feature.
Ouch. Have you made it work finally?
Nope. I just setup url-pattern as /app/*. Probably it was the wisest solution.
