how do i configure ExternalDirectories in jboss 4.2.1 versi

I am trying to set up ExternalDirectories in 4.2.1 .i tried to modify server.xml under deploy/jboss-web.deployer but it is not working is there a different way to configure
Below is the chnage i made in sever.xml

I added ""
server.xml configuration under tha localhost
and also i copied the we.xml to /conf directory.

Does it work anymore in 4.2.1 ??
Also which web.xml i should copy in conf directory??

Enclose your XML text in UBBCode "code" tags - you can do this by selecting the XML text and clicking the Code button above the editor window. Also, click the Preview button to ensure that the formatting is correct and the XML text shows up before posting.

I have never used a multi-part path, mine have always been a single prt. Also I have never used defaultWebXml. See an example at http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=139630#4166457
