How can I customize FormAuthenticator?

I hardly find any document to show how to do that.

Do I need to rewrite the FormAuthenticator or extend it and describe in a XML file?

For example:

Write a FormAuthenticatorImpl extend FormAuthenticator.

After then change the describe in the file
/org/apache/catalina/mbeans/mbeans-descriptors.xml.
