I have the same problem. I'm using my own Action class to make the authentication, and I don't know how to sets the UserPrincipal.
Which techniques have you tried so far ? Maybe we can start exploring from there.
Sorry for not able to provide any concrete help yet.
You cannot set the request UserPrincipal without using container managed authentication.

I am new.
I want to explain
If you want your own principal to be returned from getUserPrincipal (meaning that you want to set you own user principal), you need to let the container (tomcat/JBoss) do the authentication for you, meaning you need to use BASIC or FORM (j_security_check) authentication.
I try to set UserPrincipal without using j_security_check under jboss.
So, I am tired to using jboss.
Know I am using weblogic 8.1.
I can set UserPrincipal without using j_security_check.
My question is
Why I can not set UserPrincipal without using j_security_check under jboss.
