alternative to accessing datasource from an RMI client

I see the following remark to the question of accessing the datasource from a client. I would like to know what is your view in detail and what are the alternatives for this? Is there a workaround?

In JBoss-3.2.x you cannot, DataSources are not exposed remotely. There is an implementation of this in JBoss4. I would not recommend this anti-pattern

Run the code that accesses the datasource inside the application server.
