so it works on windows but not linux ? weird.

Could you put this in our jira ?

What happens if you unselect the "Only show features which are applicable...." ?

That's a point which I don't catch at all. Actually I'm not sure if this is the problem. In case we are able to hunt it down to the point that Linux is the problem, I would first consider the Java VM to be the likely trouble maker. Sun's JDK 1.5.0 is still quite buggy for AMD64 systems and doesn't seem to like Eclipse (for instance, the JIT compiler makes a lot of problems in Eclipse). So maybe...

However, right now I think it makes sense to wait a few more days. I'm expecting Eclipse 3.1.1 to become available with a nice installation script for Gentoo very soon. This would be a good opportunity to reinstall Eclipse completely. Maybe my Eclipse configuration got somehow puzzled during recent updates and/or tests with different virtual machines, etc. Right now I really can't rule that out completely. So I think it makes sense to check if there is anything weird going on my system. If a fresh installation doesn't help, I'll file the issue in the JIRA.

Do you mean the checkbox "Ignore features not applicable to this environment" appearing after "Search for new features to install"? In this case checking or unchecking makes no difference at all.

            Problem solved/vanished!

Don't ask me why this didn't work before. Anyway, I reinstalled Eclipse from scratch on this machine and now it works. So I guess this issue was related to the complicated upgrade path poor Eclipse had to handle on this machine during the last months including frequent changes of the VM (buggy java.compiler in Sun's 1.5.0_x), etc.
