lists.jboss.org
Overview
This is our in-house mailing list server using GNU Mailman. We've transitioned off of Source Forge's list server and decided to use Mailman to make the process a little bit easier. Below are details on how to get new lists setup, standard settings and some lists to the migrated and old sf.net lists.
List Setup
We use standard settings for setting up lists, with only minor changes to the defaults (see below for details). If you need a list, email us at postmaster@lists.jboss.org with the following information:
List moderators (who will moderate the list, usually the project manager. Lists are setup unmoderated, but any posting by a non-member will be sent to the moderators for approval.)
Project name
We will create the following lists:
project_name-announce@lists.jboss.org (announce list)
project_name-commits@lists.jboss.org (svn/cvs commits)
project_name-issues@lists.jboss.org (jira issues)
project_name-dev@lists.jboss.org (dev list + forums)
project_name-users@lists.jboss.org (user list + forums)
Examples:
General List Options
Configuration Setting | Default | Explanation |
---|---|---|
respond_to_post_requests | yes | Send mail to poster when their posting is held for approval? |
admin_immed_notify | yes | Should the list moderators get immediate notice of new requests, as well as daily notices about collected ones? |
send_welcome_msg | yes | Send welcome message to newly subscribed members? You can choose whether or not new subscribers are sent the welcome message. You can customize the text of the welcome message in the welcome_msg setting. |
anonymous_list | no | Hide the sender of a message, replacing it with the list address. |
reply_goes_to_list | poster | Where are replies to list messages directed? |
emergency | no | Emergency moderation of all list traffic. If set to Yes, all incoming email messages which would normally be distributed to the list will be automatically moderated. This setting does not affect messages that would normally be rejected or discarded. |
subject_prefix | Prefix for subject line of list postings. | |
send_goodbye_msg | yes | Send goodbye message to members when they are unsubscribed? You can choose whether or not users who are leaving the list are sent a message when they unsubscribe. You can customize the text of the goodbye message in the goodbye_msg setting. |
real_name | all lowercase | The public name of the list. This is how the name of your list will appear. You can make case changes only. |
owner | project manager | The list administrator's email address(es). |
info | - | An introductory description about the list. This information is included at the top of the listinfo page for the list. You can use this setting to provide detailed information about the list. |
administrivia | yes | Check postings and intercept ones that seem to be administrative requests? Administrivia tests will check postings to see whether they are really meant as administrative requests such as subscribing or unsubscribing. If the postings are administrative requests, they will be added to the administrative requests queue and the owner will be notified. |
umbrella_list | no | Send password reminders to "-owner" address instead of directly to user. |
welcome_msg | - | List-specific text prepended to new-subscriber welcome message. When new users are added to the list (either by subscribing themselves or being added by the list owner), they are sent a welcome message (if you want them to - see send_welcome_msg). Any text you enter in this setting will be included in the welcome message. |
description | - | A terse phrase identifying this list. The description appears on the listinfo page and in the header of all messages sent to the list. The description here should be short. You can include more detailed information in the info setting. |
moderator | none | The list moderator's email address(es). |
reply_to_address | no | Explicit Reply-To: header. |
new_member_options | Filter out duplicate | Default options for new members joining this list. These are the initial options set for members when they first subscribe to your list. |
goodbye_msg | - | Text sent to people leaving the list. When a user leaves the list or is removed by the list owner, the user will be sent a "goodbye message" (if your list is configured to do so - see send_goodbye_msg). Any text added in this setting will be included in the message. If left blank, no text will be added to the generic unsubscribe message. |
max_message_size | 250 | Maximum length in kilobytes (KB) of a message body. Set the maximum message size limit for your list. |
admin_notify_mchanges | no | Should administrator get notices of subscribes and unsubscribes? |
send_reminders | yes | Send monthly password reminders? |
