How do you override the need to store the state to the datab

I have a simple test program that set a "complex" object as a variable. I get the following runtime exception:
"java.lang.RuntimeException: contents of jbpm.varmapping.properties does not specify how jbpm should store objects of type 'com.my.example.foo' in the database

      1. Is it mandatory to always persist the state to the database?

      2. If not, how do I override it.

Thanks in advance for your help.
