a4j:poll does not immediately poll on page rendering

Hello,
I use the a4j:poll component on a page and I would need for its action method to be called immediately on page rendering AND subsequently when the interval has expired. It seems not to be called on page rendering but only when the interval has expired. Can anyone please help?

I had a similar problem where I wanted it to poll on page load (not render), and found this helpful:

It's not as nice as a "pollonload" attribute, but luckily I use facelets, so I can wrap it in a custom component easily. Hope this helps.
