Is it possible to run the samples in the NetBeans IDE? I can deploy to JB 4.0.5 GA but I did not manage to create a NetBeans Project ?

Can anybody help me with this?

Hi Tom, maybe this helps you getting a basic seam projects started in netbeans, this was mostly thought as a reminder for me, but maybe it's helpful.

          Hi Jens,

Thanks a lot for that large and brand new document. I found another interesting blog article from one of the book authors (Michael Yuan):

          http://www.michaelyuan.com/blog/2006/11/16/rapid-seam-development-with-netbeans/

This may be interesting for others too.

            Hi all,
Has anyone managed to buy the book without subscribing to safari library or bookshelf? I'm only interested in SEAM book, and it seems impossible to buy rough and cuts as standalone... :(

              Hi all again,

dont know whether I had too much java yesterday, or if there was indeed something wrong at safari website, today everything worked fined. Well, everything except the "non price" I had to "pay", instead of 0$ i had to pay NaN$.... ;)

              Now, lets get some SEAM!!

              • 19. Re: First JBoss Seam book released

Isn't this book already obsolete? :)

Seriously though, would it be a worthwhile purchase considering the amazing speed at which Seam is developing? (Even if it were up-to-date today, by the time it comes in the mail I imagine that would cease to be true.)

Or is this meant for learning the bare minimum Seam basics that'll remain consistent and probably won't really change with time?

Perhaps the Seam guys can issue updates for the book after each revision; then it won't become obsolete.
Using the ThoughReader could help with this.
                  Best of both worlds?

                    Just a quick comment.

The books may be out of date already (including the one i wrote) ... if you are an experienced Seam developer.

However ... the books tend to go over a lot of the foundations and basics. These items arent changing drastically. And the other items like iText, etc ... once you have the basics are easily understandable.

So at the very least ... they are good for that information.

Heck i've used Hibernate for years ... and still use my hibernate book as a reference on a few things.

So sad to hear that :(( because that means I wasted about $17 to buy this book on buy.com.

I prefer having the book thinner/shorter because of the removal of all outdated information than having a thick/long book with uncompilable/deprecated examples.

IMHO, it's better not to publish the book in Apr 07, wait for a couple of months when Seam is "mature" (I don't mean that mature is buggy) enough, then update the book. I think I will use Spring (including Acegi) + JPA + JSF + Facelets + Ajax4jsf for this year then Seam & Spring can integrate and we have the best of the bests?

                      • 23. Re: First JBoss Seam book released

Does anyone (directed at Michael Yuan) know if the Rough Cuts version of the book will be updated any further prior to the print release? I just purchased the rough cuts version (as well as the printed release when its released) and I was a little disappointed to find the rough cuts <200 pages. The full print version is supposed to be 400+ and I find it a little hard to believe that half the book is not yet complete <2 months before the final release is supposed to be on store shelves. I would not expect the entire finished product to be release in Rough Cuts, I guess I was just expecting a little more.

                        Thanks

Michael Yuan, could you, please, spend a few minutes to verify if the version of your book about Seam that was just release at Safari and tagged as "Last Updated on Safari: 2007/03/08" is the final version of it. It appears to be, but at the pages' foot of the pdf is stated as "This draft prepared for...".

I would appreciate very much your help, because I want to start reading only the final version.

                          Thanks!

                          • 25. Re: First JBoss Seam book released

the "Prepared for...." stuff is all copyright material from O'Reilly, they don't want you distributing early copies of it. I don't think you will get a "final copy" via rough cuts. They still want you to buy the final release ;). I was a bit disappointed in my last post because I got a version dated 2/27/07 that was VERY incomplete. The new version dated today 3/9/07 is much thicker and more finished (321 pages). I was assuming the 2/27/07 version would be the last before the final release.

                            • 26. Re: First JBoss Seam book released

Sorry, I have been too busy updating the book to Seam 1.2.0 (but run out of time for the Spring integration stuff). I have sent the final files to the publisher. I believe the 3/9/07 version is very close to the final manuscript.

I do not have control over the Safari process. But I think they will put out another version once the book is indexed and proof read.

                              Thank you for your patience!

                              cheers

                                  Smithbstl,

The "lightweight" book is primely focused on JSF and EJB3 (the JEE 5 stuff in JBoss 5). It is for people who, for some reason, cannot use Seam at this moment. :)

                                  cheers

Just downloaded "Last Updated on Safari: 2007/03/10", "Updated: 3/10/2007 5:08:38 AM". That's after Dr. Yuan has submitted the final files. Let's hope it is the final version.
