michael.yuan Mar 13, 2007 11:53 PM (in response to theute)yes, it looks like that the version safari has is pretty close to the final. I think the publish will have another very minor update right before they go to print this month.

monkeyden Apr 25, 2007 9:54 AM (in response to theute)...and final it is. I received an email from Safari stating that I get one more download and can read online for 45 days. If nothing else, it helped me get up to speed very quickly. Thanks for authoring it guys. It was enormously helpful.

michael.yuan Apr 25, 2007 9:58 AM (in response to theute)Thank you monkeyden!
Sorry the book has been delayed for so long -- I knew I had promised it for so many times. But every time I was ready to release, Seam adds some new features I cannot resist to cover. We can blame Gavin for that. ;)
Now the book has finally come out. We will have it in JavaOne bookstores.
cheers
Michael -

avbentem May 14, 2007 3:50 AM (in response to theute)Got mine in print in the Netherlands on May 8th, but only started reading yesterday. Nice, so far, and hardly any margin, so packed with information ;-)
Publisher's site: JBoss Seam: Simplicity and Power Beyond Java EE.
By the way: it's no longer the only Seam book, and I guess "Beginning JBoss Seam: From Novice to Professional" was the first to make it in print, see the wiki. -

smithbstl May 14, 2007 12:19 PM (in response to theute)I skimmed the other book:"Beginning JBoss Seam: From Novice to Professional" from APress before "JBoss Seam: Simplicity and Power Beyond Java EE" was released. The APress book was pretty light on content. It looks like it was just a rushed attempt to be the the first Seam book to market. I would not recommend it. I am glad Michael and Thomas held this book back in order to include some of the emerging features, makes it a more worthwhile read and will get outdated so fast.

For the record .... since i am the author of that book.
It was not a rushed attempt to be first on the market.
It is as the title alludes to a "Beginners" book. It is designed for people who do not have extensive experience with Java EE, since it is relatively knew to corporations. ( i only know of a few actually using it)
The book gives a person a solid basis in JBoss Seam as well as Java EE. -

kingcu May 17, 2007 2:31 PM (in response to theute)Then you better change the subtitle to "From Dummy to Novice", because the word "Professional" is not something one can get to after reading this book and thus is extremely misleading.

d.bolesta May 18, 2007 9:03 AM (in response to theute)The IT world is not all about Java. For me Java was a choice, the same was about Seam, the framework, which I like by it's aproach. If you are IT professonal and are more than 30 years old then the book "Beginning JBoss Seam: From Novice to Professional" give you better overview and respects your different backgrounds. The fact that I bought the "JBoss Seam: Simplicity and Power Beyond Java EE" was simply because it looked more recent and also by respect to it's authors. I like it, in spite of spontanous way it was written. It's ok - the authors are the project leader of Seam. I don't like the jerky expression used by kingsu - "From Dummy to Novice".

ge0ffrey May 29, 2007 11:39 AM (in response to theute)Great book :) Reads very easy and fast.
I think I found a mistake (correct me if I am wrong):
p. 92 "Seam POJO component" "and it (= the pojo Isuppose?) has the default conversation scope if the @Scope is not specified".
However, I just found out that adding @Scope(ScopeType.CONVERSATION) on my pojo actually does make a difference, and my @Create annotated method doesn't get called several times in the same request.
I am using an archetype generated app with seam 1.2.1 of http://software.softeu.cz and it uses jetty and the microcontainer apparently. -

gavin.king May 29, 2007 12:33 PM (in response to theute)Yes, JavaBean components default to EVENT scope.
