Validating entity properties that don't get persisted?

Say that we've got an entity with some fields that would never get persisted. (for example, we take a credit card number and use it for a purcase). Still, we need to validate it.

In cases like this is it better to use Hibernate validators on fields that are not persisted, or just use a JSF validator instead?
