It works for me with String. (demosite sample) -

Concerning this topic, all work fine for me. When I define the grouping on the page it is succesfully displayed in the table when page is rendered.
Could you please prepare the simplest project for discovering the issue? -

As workarround you can define sortBy attribute for column you wand to group and all will be OK.
