    Robert Heath Newbie

I am a JBoss newbee.  If I am asking a stupid question, I apologize.  I am trying to start JBoss 5.1.0.GA and run.bat hangs.  Attached is the log.

          Peter Johnson Master

It is not hung, it is up and running waiting for requests. That last line is the one that indicates that the staup has completed. You will not see anything else in the command prompt window unless certain types of requests come in, or certain apps output more logging.

At this time you should open a browser and go to http://localhost:8080

By the way, pick up the free chapter 1 for JBoss in Action (http://www.manning.com/jamae) - it will give a brief intro to get you started.

Also, welcome to JBoss and to the forum!

            Thanks Peter,

When I start the JBoss server from Eclipse 3.5.2, the status on the Server page remains as [Starting, Synchronized] and remains that, never reaching the status of [Started, Synchronized].  Then when the Eclipse Start timer expires, I get an error popup, and JBoss is stopped.

Am I supposed to do something to suspend the timer?  Am I supposed to do something to allow Eclipse to understand that the JBoss startup is complete?

It takes a while for JBoss to startup inside of eclipse. I usually set the timers to a high number so it does not complain. Jboss eventually starts up. You may want to try doing that with the base jboss download with no config changes or deployments. Once that works then you can try different configurations or deployments.

              thanks

                Thanks Sandeep,

Peter Johnson seems to think that the server has started.  In fact I am able to load the JBoss admin page from my browser. When I start the server from the command line, I left the machine idle for almost an hour, and the script did not progress any further than the log file posted at the top of this post.

When I start the server from Eclipse, the time out occurs.  I extended the timer to over six minutes, and the timer still expired on the same line of the startup script on which the script stopped when I started the script from the command line.

                  Robert

Indeed the last line in the log above means that the server started. I started out fresh with the latest of eclipse and jboss 5.1.0, and got it started in eclipse. I left it running for a long time, but it did not timeout.

Can you check the jbossweb.sar\server.xml and make sure your HTTP connector is properly configured for 8080 or the port of your choosing? Looks like eclipse is trying to connect to the HTTP port but is timing out.

                  Thanks

                    Thanks Sandeep,

                    The record is as follows:

                    <Connector protocol="HTTP/1.1" port="8080" address="${jboss.bind.address}"
                                   connectionTimeout="20000" redirectPort="8443" />

which I assume means that the port is configured as 8080,  As a matter of fact, I am able to load the JBoss page at http://localhost:8080

Thanks for your help Peter and Sandeep!

For some reason, the Eclipse timer now does not time out and the server status becomes Started.  I don't know why it started working right.  I did delete some servers from the workspace and the filesystem and reinstalled the servers. That probably had something to do with the servers now starting.

I am still having problems, and I am trying to understand the problems and characterize them, but at least I am moving forward.

I have several servers installed on the Eclipse workspace.  Maybe I have not correctly set all of the ports.  Maybe there are some conflicts between the various servers.

                      Thanks again for your help!!

By the way, when using Eclipse it is not port 8080 that is important at startup, but rather port 1099 - the JNDI port. Eclipse makes a JNDI call to port 1099 asking for the JMX server and then asks the JMX server for the Server MBean which it then queries to see if the server got started. If anything fails along the way, Eclipse reports that the app server did not start in time.

There are a multitude of things that can go wrong with this (the forum is full of posts where this has happened). Typical problems are:

                        * The user changed the ports

                        * The /etc/hosts file has invalid inforation in it

                        * The user bound the app server to a host other than localhost or 0.0.0.0

                        * The system is configured without the loopback adaptor (this was a new one, at least to me, that just came up a few days ago)

                        * Just plain general wierdness in Eclipse or the JDK (installing a new Eclispe or JDK magically solved the issue)

Sometimes if you go into the Eclipse log file (workspace/.metadata/.log) you can figure out where things went wrong and correct them. But only sometimes.
