Curious to know if the gap between application and web servers has narrowed to a point where an application server like Jboss can be used to both serve web static assets as well as dynamic jsp/java pages within the same instance?

In other words, no need for Apache in front of Jboss with mod_jk.  Just run Jboss on port 80. Can Does Jboss scale as well as Apache and other web servers do or should there still be a need for a web server "shielding" the application servers?
