1) a4j:commandButton does not have an attribute reRender. You should use render instead.
2) If you think that your problem is in JS code you could try using JS alert command to find a point when JS stops working.

Now the request is happening but it seems the reRender on a4j:commandLink is not working. I've taken a look into the a4j.taglib.xml there is no tag as attribute named 'reRender' for a4j:commandLink but there is 'render'. Is that also the same case as 'a4j:commandButton'?
Yes, it is the same. It's JSF 2.0 style.

and take care of submission mode for menu if using your own command links inside in order not to rise concurrent requests. In 4.x none mode values are refactored to client to be consistent in all components.
