ic... if this just some kind of internal admin application - maybe some redesign possible like having one menu bar for choosing current application and at the application page having options bar.. I do not see any otheer suggestions right now and task unfortunatelly targetted for 4.x only as 3.3.x branch officially closed.

I created a top level toolbar and then a second sub toolbar with a width of 15% to load the result from the previous selection.
I also added some code to check to see how many elements are in a menu.
If it is below 1000 I load the menu in the first toolbar.
If it is greater than 1000 I load the menu with only its direct children.
I then require an onclick event to display those children in the subtoolbar.
It works very fast too.
yup.. that's something like I meant.. And as for me - it should be even more convenient than browse between deep level'ed popup dropdowns. Anyway good to hear that such workaround suitable
