Does anyone have a better example of the capabilities of using filters than the documentation provides?

How about the multiplejarspackage report. How would you exclude looking at a given package?

so add

multiplejarspackage=com.mycompany.mypackage1,com.mycompany.mypackage2

to your jboss-tattletale.properties file.

If that isn't what you are looking for - explain your use-case in detail.
