Sure, that sounds very interesting! I guess such a refactoring would have to be applied step-by-step. Let me also check with Łukasz, maybe you could work together.
If you change any code, of course you can add yourself to @authors. You'll have to sign the CLA for Hibernate, though: https://cla.jboss.org/index.seam

What I would suggest is just to leave a short explanation why certain pattern is used, this way we spend less time on reverse-engineering. Feel free to contact me directly.
