not allowing nulls in numeric fields in db

The cmp table has a numeric field, and Iam not invoking corresponding set method on remote interface . I expect a null value for this field in the record. But I found it's having a value zero.
any explanation.

It's a int. But as Iam not updating that field by calling it's set method, Iam expecting a null in db field.

The EJB specification requires that all cmp-fields be initialized to java defaults, so an int is initialized to 0.
