    String primary key performance

      This is a generic DB design question really...

      How much of a performance impact does using strings as primary keys have in today's RDBMS? Is using longish UUID strings (36 to 48 characters long) still adviced against? Or is it necessary to optimize these away only in some specific tables that need the best performance in queries..?
