brand new to RHQ - can't do the install step

    Ben Cotton Newbie

Hi,  I get stuck immediately trying to bring up RHQ.  Any help to get a newbie passed this first shot roadblock?  What is this remote://127.0.0.1:9999 Can't connect error?  What is it expecting?  I am trying to do the very first step of the install.  Thanks.

          Hey Ben,

sorry that you are having trouble here, the command line you gave looks pretty ok to me.

Could you perhaps try one thing and don't cd into bin/ before calling rhqctl, but call it from $rhq_server  as bin/rhqctl to see if that makes a difference.

I that does not help, can you please check if port 9999 is in use, but on a different ip via  netstat -an |grep 9999

If that is the case, can you please send the output of ifconfig and the respective lines from /etc/hosts?

What OS (and java version) are you on?

Thanks for the response Heiko. We have some big ambitions wrt what we think RHQ can do for us, including developing our our own RHQ plugins.  We will be very patient to get up an running, so thanks again for helping us.  Here are the infos you requested.

any insights guys?  pretty fundamental for me to have an expectation for this to work.

                Hi Ben,

I agree, it does seem like it should be more straightforward.  Going back to your initial post, it seems like you did the right things according to the installation wiki:

                  https://docs.jboss.org/author/display/RHQ/RHQ+Server+Installation

                1) unzip

                2) cd to rhq-install-dir/bin

                3) edit rhq-server.properties with your desired rdb settings and server info

                4) rhqctl install --storage-data-root-dir /home/u935903/rhq-saved-caches/

Did you actually execute an '> rhqctl install --storage' prior to what you posted?  Because it looks like the storage node was not installed before the rhq server component.  Or, was there a failure prior to the installation attempt you posted?

                • 5. Re: brand new to RHQ - can't do the install step

there was no other failure reported.

Here is output of command invoke you suggested:

                  u935903@lri4ld044> bin/rhqctl install --storage

Well OK, it seems the storage node is installed.  Next, I guess would be to ensure it can run and is running.  You can try an 'rhqctl start --storage'.   Or, minimally, 'rhqctl status' shoul be able to tell you if it's running.  Also, check the logs/storage.log to see if it looks healthy.

Once storage is running it should be safe to 'rhqctl install --server'.

To install RHQ into the underlying AS server the AS server must be started, and then the RHQ installer will inject RHQ into it. The original problem would indicate that the vanilla AS server may have failed to start.  If you have the <rhq-install>/logs/server.log you may be able to see something in there to indicate the issue.

                      > To install RHQ into the underlying AS server the AS server must be started

What does this mean?  Do I have to have an instance of an AS started before I can start RHQ?  Where is this documented?  In the ideal case, I don't want to install RHQ into an underlying AS server.

If this is a pre-requesite to have a running AS server in place, please provide me a complete set of instructions on how to get this running - including the AS server prerequisite.

Here is what happens when I follow your last set of instructions.

There is no $RHQ_HOME/logs/server.log  file of any kind.

                          Hi Ben,

I am having exactly the same problem when trying to install the RHQ. Did you find any solution to this problem ? any help would be greatly appreciated.

                          Thanks,

                          Ibrahim.

Well. I figured out the problem and solved it.

The server startup script didnot have the execute permission.

                            .<RHQ-SERVER-IDR>/jbossas/bin/standalone.sh

                            -rw--r--. 1 root root 8517 Feb 12  2013 standalone.sh

Provided the execution permission using chmod u+x standalone.sh  and the executed the "rhqctl install" again. RHQ server installed successfully.

Hope this ll be helpful for anyone who bump into the same problem.

                            Regards,

                            Ibrahim.

                              Lucky you!

I have installed RHQ several times, but now the firt time I have tried with Debian's "standard" openjdk.

Is it possible, that it is not supported at all? The installation  lasts forever, the messages are:

                              while in the server.log:

maybe not related but I want to share my experience. I've run into exactly the same problem while using JDK8. Switching JAVA_HOME to JDK7 helped and installation was successful.
