To what degree to we plan the system to scale across multiple nodes? I think that large scale installations (for WF we currently baseline on 100 vm across 10 hosts) support for parallel computing would certainly be beneficial.

This is more a question about requirements. I don't want to dive into technical details yet, although the answer to this is very likely going to impact the implementation to a certain degree.
