you could do it by using deployment descriptor where you define work item handlers with special resolver and then implement this interface for spring beans look up. Similar implementations are already for Java reflection and MVEL.
Alternatively you could extend the SpringRuntimeManagerFactoryImpl to override RegisterableItemsFactory instance
