after updating from Modeshape 4.3.0 to 5.4.1 I have bad performance on my JCR queries with LocalIndexProvider:

I found 3 reasons for the bad performance
NoSuchRepositoryException on every query in ModeShapeEngine.java, which makes it harder for me to compare the queries between 4.3.0 and 5.4.1, see https://developer.jboss.org/message/982659
Connection-Pooling in Oracle-XA-Datasource:
Setting connectionCachingEnabled to "true" in the xa-datasource which was turned off in 4.3.0 (possibly for infinispan) did a signifcant performance boost and leads me to 3.)
JcrQueryResult$QueryResultIterator: for every entry in the query-result a kind of lazy-loading is done by the iterator and a query

SELECT CONTENT FROM MODESHAPE_REPOSITORY WHERE ID = ?

is executed for every element. This leads to a lot of small queries, every with a small execution time, but in sum a total time of 31 seconds.

In 4.3.0 the iterator does not execute this query, at least each time.

Is there a way to avoid this behaviour of QueryResultIterator in 5.4.1?

I observe the same behavior, specially with the queries which has too many joins like the one with ISCHILDNODE or ISDESCENDNODE . I, prefer using getNode by path. Modeshape 5.4.1 is not scalable, it has several performance glitches and I am not sure if there is a proper support.

Unfortunately, using 'getNode by path' was not possible for this query and my data structure.

At first I suspected the solution to increase the size of indexProviders-cacheSize. But that did not help.

Then I found the solution to increase the workspaces-cacheSize significantly

You could also try to use Lucene index provider instead of Local one. As for me the former demonstrates better performance than the latter.

I experimented a bit with Lucene. I also think that Lucene would be better than LocalIndexProvider. Unfortunately I did not manage to build up the index with Lucene.
But I think Lucene would not do a significant performance improvement here because in this case it's not a performance issue from the index provider.
In my opinion it is the lazy loading of the small elements/sub-queries that can be avoided by the increasing the workspace cache and made the biggest performance gain.

I have encountered the same problem, I think that increasing the cacheSize does not seem to be the right solution, because when the data is evicted from the cache (after a delay or a restart of the server), the loading becomes very slow again (for the first request) . Have you found another solution? or is there a way to increase the cache timeout?

Unfortunately, I have not found a better solution yet. But I think there is no TTL time or eviction time for this cache. It's a simple hash set limited only by size. But you're right, every restart is problematic.
