I also tried <h:outputLink> in place of the <a4j:commandLink> and now the toolTip won't even show. Are there issues with rich:toolTip in 3.1.4GA? I'm beginning to believe there are... -

You can use:<a4j:commandLink value="#link#" onclick="return false;"> <rich:toolTip event="onclick" direction="top-right" showDelay="200" styleClass="rich-tooltip"> <h:outputText value="abc" styleClass="rich-tooltip-text"/> </rich:toolTip> </a4j:commandLink>
