Yes, we have implemented this, using SUN examples, but the resulting performance is not acceptable.
Here is an idea. Use ssh port forwarding. e.g. between your localhost:yourport and the remotehost:theirport. SSH supports supports compression (obviously as well as encryption).
This change would not require any app changes, other than deployment ones, I'd imagine.
