Try: "run -b xxx &" That should run JBoss in the background and thus be impervious to your closing putty.
Tried that. Doesn't work.
Then try: "nohup run.sh -b xxx &"
Or add "nohup" to the line in run.sh that runs java.
Got it. I had to write a simple shell script:
sh /opt/local/jboss-4.0.4.GA/bin/run.sh -b [ip address] > jboss_log.log &
