Difference between Service and Datasource

Hi all !

Could someone explain me the difference between Service and Datasource files ? They give about the same practical result, so why should we use 2 such entities, could one of them totally replace the other ?

The -ds.xml is transformed internallly into a -service.xml using xsl

The -ds.xml is much simpler
